Recreational
Row for the love of it
Overview
Recreational rowing at OTRC is about enjoyment, wellbeing, and community. It's for members who want to row regularly, be active outdoors, and be part of a social group - without the pressure of competition or intensive training.
But don't mistake relaxed for aimless. Sessions still have purpose and direction - you'll improve your technique, build fitness, and become a more confident rower. The difference is that the goals are yours to set: enjoyment, wellbeing, social connection, fresh air, or simply the satisfaction of moving a boat well across the water.
This isn't lesser rowing. Recreational rowers deserve coaching tailored to their aims, and that's exactly what we provide. Sessions use the club's most stable and accessible boats - coxed quads, doubles, and the explore fleet - with an emphasis on steady rowing, safety, and making sure everyone has a good time on the water.
Beyond the rowing itself, the recreational group is the social heart of the club. Post-session teas, social events, and volunteering - if something's happening at OTRC, recreational rowers are usually at the centre of it.

More Than Just Rowing
The social side of recreational rowing is as important as the rowing itself. It's a chance to meet people, build friendships, and be part of something bigger than a workout.
- Post-session teas and catch-ups at the clubhouse
- Summer BBQs and social events throughout the year
- Christmas gatherings and quiz nights
- Skills workshops and boat handling days
- Opportunities to try different boat types and styles of rowing
Many of our recreational rowers say the friendships they've made at the club are as valuable as the rowing. There's something about sharing a boat - and the occasional soaking - that brings people together.
The Backbone of the Club
Recreational rowers are often the most reliable volunteers at OTRC. From helping at events and maintaining equipment to welcoming new members and organising social activities, this group keeps the club running.
That's not an obligation - it's just what happens when people feel connected to a place. If you want to get involved beyond the rowing, there's always something to help with. And if you'd rather just turn up, row, and go home - that's perfectly fine too.
Your Rowing Journey
While recreational rowing doesn't focus on competition, we support members who want to develop their rowing further:
- Skills Development: Progress from stable boats to more challenging craft as your confidence grows
- Coxing Opportunities: Learn to cox for recreational and racing crews
- Optional Events: Join friendly events like the Boston Rowing Marathon if the mood takes you
- Pillar Transition: Move to Fitness & Skills or Racing if you develop new ambitions
Progression is entirely optional and self-paced. Many members are happy rowing at the same level for years - and that's exactly how it should be.
