From Beginners to Rowers

Real stories from our members

Mark Thompson

New Rower

"I received a very warm welcome - it was instantly clear no matter your background, this club makes room for you. After just 2 taster sessions I joined, and 15 months later I'm enjoying rowing leisurely and competitively. Everyone is friendly, approachable, and I wish I'd found this years ago."

From newbie to racing in 15 months

Peter Dunn

Started at 45

"At 45, I was suffering with a bad back and was persuaded to come down and have a row. The combination of stunning scenery and the challenge of learning was too much - I was hooked! The club is a vibrant and lovely place with a strong ethos that fun and fitness can co-exist."

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all! Our Learn to Row course is designed for complete beginners of all fitness levels. We'll build your fitness gradually throughout the course. Many of our members started with no sporting background whatsoever.

Wear comfortable sports clothing that you don't mind getting a bit wet. Avoid loose or baggy clothes. Bring a water bottle and a change of clothes. We provide all rowing equipment including boats, oars, and safety equipment.

While being able to swim is recommended for confidence, it's not essential. We provide buoyancy aids if needed, and our safety launch is always present. We'll conduct a water confidence assessment during your first session.

British Rowing membership is required before starting the course. This provides you with personal injury and liability insurance - essential for all rowers whether racing or not. We'll arrange this for you as part of the registration process.

After completing the course, you'll receive 12 weeks of free club membership to give rowing a proper try. During this period, you can attend supervised coached sessions at the following times:

  • Saturday 12pm sessions
  • Thursday 6:30pm sessions (during summer/light evenings)
  • Tuesday & Wednesday mornings (when available and competent)

Please note: During this transition period, you must row in a supervised, coached environment. You won't be able to book boats out independently - all rowing must be during the scheduled sessions above.

This gives you the best chance to fully experience rowing before becoming a full club member. The vast majority of our Learn to Row graduates go on to become full members of the club!

We understand life happens! If you miss a session, we'll work with you to ensure you get all six structured lessons. While we aim for six successive weeks, we recognise this isn't always possible and can provide additional support to help you complete all the essential elements of the course at a pace that works for you.
