Fitness & Skills
Build real fitness through proper rowing
Overview
Fitness & Skills is for members who want more than a social outing on the water but aren't necessarily looking to race. The focus here is on building technique and fitness to the point where rowing becomes a genuinely effective workout.
Coached sessions focus on the things that make a real difference - catch timing, blade work, balance, power application. The aim is measurable improvement: rowing further, rowing better, rowing more efficiently. Every session has a purpose, and every stroke is an opportunity to get something right.
The difference between Fitness & Skills and Recreational isn't about ability - it's about intent and intensity. Members here row with purpose. They want to be challenged, they want feedback, and they want to see progress. That might mean holding a steady split on the erg, nailing a technical drill on the water, or simply feeling stronger week on week.
For some, this is the perfect place to stay - pushing themselves in a structured environment without the commitment of racing. For others, it's a natural stepping stone towards competition. Either way, the coaching and the sessions are designed to make you a better, fitter rower.

The Erg Programme
The rowing machine - the erg - is where fitness gains happen fastest. Our structured erg programme runs year-round, with sessions designed to build endurance, power, and mental toughness.
Erg sessions complement water time perfectly. The technique you develop on the water translates directly to the machine, and the fitness you build on the erg makes every stroke on the river more effective. It's a virtuous cycle - and you'll feel the difference within weeks.
Sessions are coached and structured. You won't just be told to "row for 30 minutes" - expect intervals, rate changes, technique drills, and the occasional friendly competition to keep things interesting.
Where Fitness & Skills Leads
There's no pressure to move on from Fitness & Skills. Many members find it's exactly what they want from their rowing - structured, challenging, and satisfying without the commitment of racing.
But if competition does start to appeal, the transition into Racing is a natural one. You'll already have the fitness base, the technique, and the understanding of crew dynamics. Coaches can help you explore that path when you're ready.
Equally, if you want to go deeper into technique - working on sculling skills, boat handling, or coaching others - Fitness & Skills gives you the platform to do that.
Into Racing
Ready for competition? Your fitness and technique will give you a head start. Coaches can introduce you to novice racing when the time is right.
